Humans of the Houston Bike Guide

Houston Bike Guide Creator
Hi, I'm Madeleine — a planner, organizer, and person who loves to bike in Houston. I built this guide to make it easier for people like you to ride confidently and comfortably in our city. Let’s make biking better, together!

Website Designer
I'm Blake, and I too love to bike in Houston! We have big dreams of building the ultimate website to lower barriers for riders in Houston. Stay tuned for more helpful features!
Many others have contributed their time, effort, and insight to this guide. We're especially grateful to Bryan Dotson for his great work mapping the west side of Houston, and to the many volunteers helping build a better biking future.
Why Houston Bike Guide?
Houston is an amazing place to ride a bicycle for utility, and for fun!
Our network is growing, but it isn't always easy to find safe, comfortable, shaded, and beautiful routes between sections of quality off-street infrastructure. We're helping you discover the best ways to navigate our vibrant neighborhoods!
- The Superways map — shows Houston's bike through-routes connecting you between neighborhoods.
- The Bayou On-Ramps map — helps you find the closest ways to access our city's gorgeous bayou trail network.
Where the Guide is Going
We have detailed maps for:
- Montrose
- Clear Lake
- Spring Branch
- Meyerland (Willow Waterhole)
But, we want to complete detailed maps for:
- East End
- 3rd Ward
- First Ward
- Fifth Ward
- Northside
- Midtown
- Southwest Inner-Loop - West U, Bellaire, Braeswood
- Heights
Other Items on Our To-Do List
- A guide that shows you how to use METRO rail and bus connections to extend your range
- Complete detailed pages with images and videos for all hotspots that need careful attention, or extra explanation in each neighborhood.
- A page showing you where NOT to bike
- Downloadable maps for you to share!
- A bike parking map, showing you where you can easily and safely lock your bike in Houston
- A page connecting you to all kinds of group rides in the city so you can find people to ride with
Imagine...
Our ultimate goal is to build a Houston Bike Guide mobile app like Google Maps for routing and turn-by-turn directions that only uses our pre-approved routes.
Mapping Ethos
Our maps are designed to help you find safe, comfortable, and beautiful routes for biking in Houston. We prioritize low-traffic - low-stress streets, bike lanes, and off-street trails that connect from place to place . We also highlight roads to avoid, so you can ride with confidence. There are many bikeable streets in Houston -- we are simply attempting to showcase what we think are the best alternative routes, given the constraints and potential dangers of their locations.
Biking in the public right-of-way is inherently dangerous. We provide these tools to help you make decisions about route choice, but we are not responsible for any crashes or injuries that occur while biking in Houston. Stay alert, follow traffic laws, and always prioritize your safety.
These big goals are going to help a lot of people ride in Houston, but they take a lot of time and effort. Consider supporting us so that we can keep the momentum going!
